Maserati Unveils MCPura Supercar: A Legacy of Combustion

At the 2025 Goodwood Festival of Speed, Maserati made a stunning debut with its all-new supercar, the MCPura. Embracing a purely internal combustion engine approach amid the industry-wide push toward electrification, the MCPura reinforces Maserati’s legacy of performance and craftsmanship. Founded in 1914 by the Maserati brothers, the brand—now part of the Stellantis Group—has become synonymous with high performance and unique design. The unveiling of the MCPura marks yet another milestone in Maserati’s storied history.

Honoring Heritage, Innovating Design

As the successor to the MC20, the MCPura carries forward the iconic mid-engine layout and carbon-fiber monocoque chassis. The mid-engine configuration provides near-perfect weight distribution for superior handling and cornering stability at high speeds. Meanwhile, the carbon-fiber monocoque dramatically reduces weight and enhances chassis rigidity for improved safety and performance.

The vehicle’s curb weight is kept under 1,500 kg, with the coupe version at just 1,650 kg and the convertible at 1,730 kg. This results in an impressive power-to-weight ratio of approximately 2.33 kg/hp, placing it among the best in its class and laying a solid foundation for top-tier performance.

On the exterior, the design stays true to Maserati’s elegant signature style. The aggressive front features a polygonal grille flanked by sharp LED headlights, evoking the image of a poised predator. Flowing lines run from the front wheels to the rear, emphasizing its aerodynamic intent. The design integrates bold aero components, including a large front splitter for front-end downforce, sculpted side skirts to reduce turbulence, and a rear wing generating significant downforce—ensuring stability even during track-level performance.

Notably, the convertible version features a foldable glass roof with PDLC (Polymer Dispersed Liquid Crystal) technology, allowing it to switch between transparent and opaque modes instantly, offering both visual charm and functional flexibility.

Nettuno Engine, Ultimate Performance

The MCPura continues to use the same 3.0L twin-turbocharged V6 “Nettuno” engine from the MC20—a fully in-house Maserati development that showcases the brand’s engineering prowess. The engine delivers 630 horsepower and 730 Nm of torque, setting it apart in the supercar segment.

At the heart of this powertrain is an F1-derived pre-chamber combustion system with twin-spark ignition, significantly improving combustion efficiency. Traditional engines ignite fuel directly in the main combustion chamber. In contrast, the Nettuno system pre-ignites fuel in a separate pre-chamber, creating a high-pressure plasma jet that fires into the main chamber, triggering a rapid and complete burn. This enhances torque output, particularly at mid-to-high RPMs, delivering explosive acceleration and instant throttle response.

The engine is paired with an 8-speed Tremec dual-clutch wet transmission that offers lightning-fast gear shifts. Power is sent exclusively to the rear wheels, providing a raw, responsive, and engaging driving feel. The MCPura accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in just 2.9 seconds, delivers a top speed of 325 km/h, and reaches 300 km/h in only 8.8 seconds—incredible numbers that highlight its performance credentials.

Five drive modes are available—Wet, Comfort, Sport, Corsa (Track), and ESC Off—selectable via a central rotary dial. Each mode adjusts power delivery, suspension stiffness, shift logic, and stability control to suit varying driving environments:

  • Wet Mode: Smoother throttle response and enhanced electronic stability for slippery conditions.
  • Comfort Mode: Softer suspension and smoother shifts for daily use.
  • Sport Mode: Sharper throttle and delayed upshifts for a more thrilling experience.
  • Corsa Mode: Maximum performance for track use.
  • ESC Off: Disables electronic aids for experienced drivers who want full control.

A Commitment to Combustion in a Changing Market

While most of the supercar industry shifts toward hybrid powertrains, Maserati boldly stays the course with pure internal combustion for the MCPura, promoting the model as a celebration of the “pure driving experience.”

Maserati North America CEO Al Gardner once stated, “Maserati will never become a fully electric-only brand by abandoning combustion engines.” To them, no EV can replicate the visceral joy of a roaring engine—a key reason many customers choose Maserati in the first place.

COO Santo Ficili added, “The MCPURA marks our return to the pinnacle. Both the coupe and convertible versions are built at the Modena factory, a site that has carried the Trident legacy for over 90 years.” As Maserati’s heritage-rich manufacturing base, Modena ensures every MCPura reflects the brand’s passion and precision.

Production of the MCPura will be limited, with 120 units allocated to the U.S. and just 10 units to Canada, accounting for around one-third of its total 2026 production run. This strategy enhances exclusivity and boosts collector appeal. Pre-orders opened on July 11, with the first deliveries expected by the end of 2025. Pricing will be announced at a later date.

Despite being an early adopter of electrification—with electric versions of the GranTurismo, Grecale SUV, and GranCabrio already launched—Maserati maintains a nuanced approach to the transition. By 2025, every model will offer a pure electric variant, and by 2028, the entire lineup will be electrified. Yet, the MCPura’s arrival signals Maserati’s unwillingness to abandon its roots. Instead, the brand seeks a balance, offering diverse powertrains to meet the varied desires of enthusiasts.

With the MCPura, Maserati demonstrates not only its reverence for traditional combustion engines but also its determination to deliver exhilarating performance in a world rapidly shifting toward electrification—carving a bold and distinctive path for the future.
