U.S. President Donald Trump celebrated the 100th day of his second term in office with a gala rally at Macomb County Community College in Warren, Michigan, on April 29th. In his 90-minute speech, Trump reviewed his accomplishments in the areas of the economy, immigration, and foreign policy, and emphasized that his “America First” policies will continue to propel the United States to success. Nevertheless, the latest polls show that his approval rating has declined. Trump’s speech also failed to eliminate the outside world from his policy controversy.

Emphasis on “America First” policy

Trump’s speech centered on his “America First” policies since taking office, particularly in the areas of the economy, immigration, and national security. He began by reflecting on his 100 days in office, declaring, “We’ve accomplished more than anyone expected. The last 100 days, everyone says, have been the most successful 100 days in American history!”

He specifically emphasized trade relations with China and other countries, saying his policies have redefined America’s economic position in the world. Trump noted, “We’re getting a better deal for American workers, and a lot of people have never seen an America this strong.” On immigration, Trump reiterated his commitment to strengthening border security, especially in curbing illegal immigration. He said, “We will continue to build the border wall and make sure that illegal immigrants can’t come into our country.”

Economic policy and trade wars

Trump cited economic and trade policy as the centerpiece of his 100-day accomplishment at the rally. He criticized the U.S. trade imbalance over the years, particularly the trade deficit with China, and emphasized that the tariff policies he has pursued have helped protect American workers and businesses. Trump said of the tariffs, “China has been taking advantage of America for years, taking our jobs and our wealth. Now we’ve rewritten that story.”

However, Trump’s tariff policy has faced its fair share of controversy. Some manufacturers in Michigan have said that while the tariffs have protected some industries, they have also created rising costs and supply chain problems. Trump’s speech did not directly address these concerns, but instead reiterated his stance, “We’re not backing down, and the tariffs are about securing America’s future.”

Government reform and the “Department of Government Efficiency”

When talking about government reform, Trump highlighted the progress of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). The department, headed by billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk, aims to improve government efficiency by cutting federal spending and laying off civil servants. Trump said, “We’ve drastically cut wasteful government funding. Musk has done a great job, and we will continue to push for this reform.” However, some opponents say the overly radical reforms could affect the quality of government services, especially in areas such as healthcare, education, and social welfare. Trump has not responded directly to these criticisms, but has emphasized that the government is moving toward efficiency and fairness.

Foreign policy and global impact

In terms of foreign policy, Trump has emphasized the U.S. military and diplomatic presence, with his stance on Iran being particularly prominent. He stated, “We will continue to protect our allies in the Middle East, especially when it comes to Iran, and we will not tolerate any threats.” He also mentioned that the presence of U.S. forces in the Middle East is to ensure U.S. security interests and emphasized U.S. leadership on the global stage.

In his speech, Trump also mentioned that the U.S. relationship with NATO and said that U.S. military spending is helping other member countries take on more responsibility for their defense. Additionally, he mentioned the U.S. position on global climate change, criticized the Paris agreement for the burden it places on the U.S. economy, and reiterated that the decision to withdraw from the agreement was the right one.

Polling challenges and public reaction

Despite Trump’s high praise for his accomplishments at the rally, however, the latest polling data shows that his approval rating has fallen to 39 percent, the lowest level in recent years. The poll shows that the public has a different view of Trump’s economic and immigration policies, especially the tariff policy and immigration restrictions, which have upset some voters. Some voters said Trump’s policies make them feel “neglected”, especially in some swing states. Trump’s support base is shaking. One voter from Michigan said, “His policies are a little too aggressive, the tariffs are making my cost of living go up, and his attitude toward immigrants makes me uneasy.” Meanwhile, Trump’s supporters say he has always been “for the good of the American worker,” and has performed satisfactorily in trade negotiations and economic growth in particular.

Immigrate policy

Trump’s political roadmap

Trump’s political future remains uncertain in the face of declining poll support. Despite his confident rallies, the controversial nature of his policies and public reaction could have an impact on the 2026 elections. Experts believe that Trump will need to tweak some of his policies in the coming months, especially on the economy and immigration, to win back the support of swing voters. Trump made it clear at the rally that he will continue to push for tax cuts, immigration reform, and a tough foreign policy in the future. He added, “Our goal is to make America strong again, that’s our mission.” But Trump appeared somewhat wary of a possible challenge to his re-election by a Democratic candidate.

Trump’s 100-day accomplishments and challenges

Trump’s 100-day celebration provided him with another demonstration of his political energy and appeal to his supporters. However, he will face even greater challenges as economic pressures mount and popular support slips. How to balance radical policies with popular demand and how to cope with the pressure of the upcoming election are all issues that the Trump administration will need to focus on in the coming months.
