Party Rebellion: Trudeau Faces a Choice

56
Prim minister Justin Trudeau

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has recently faced unprecedented political challenges. According to the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) on October 24, 2024, more than 20 members of the Liberal Party met behind closed doors and explicitly called for Trudeau’s resignation from his post as prime minister, which they believe is necessary to avoid a Liberal defeat in the next federal election. The action of these party members is tantamount to a “political rebellion”, and they even signed a joint letter after the meeting, giving Trudeau an “ultimatum”, asking him to decide before October 28 whether to resign.

Trudeau in the meeting emotional, but he finally said he would seriously consider these proposals, did not express the will to leave. The background of this “forced” drama is Trudeau’s support rate continues to decline, the latest polls show that the Conservative Party’s support rate than the Liberal Party higher than 19 percentage points, if the election is now held, the Conservative Party will obtain a landslide advantage!

Internal Party Pressure

Trudeau has been prime minister twice since winning the 2015 election. During his administration, although he has made progress on issues such as climate and social welfare, he has also taken on huge debts, resulting in a continuous rise in the cost of living for domestic residents and a heavier burden on people’s lives. These issues have eroded Trudeau’s political capital and left his political future uncertain.

In addition, Trudeau faces discontent and challenges from within his own party. According to the British “Guardian” reported that the Liberal Party has 153 seats in the Canadian House of Representatives, but only about 20 members of the party openly oppose Trudeau. Still, there is not enough political pressure, the letter has no legal force, and there is no potential successor to challenge Trudeau’s position.

Trudeau’s political crisis has attracted widespread attention not only at home, but also in the international media. India’s Stan Times newspaper reported Trudeau’s allegations against Indian agents last year, and the Indian government’s refutation of the allegations, further ratcheting up the diplomatic pressure on Trudeau.

The Future of Canadian Politics

Trudeau must make a choice in the face of the party’s “push”. He can choose to resign and give way to a new leader in order to win more support for the Liberals in the next election. But he could also choose to stick around and use his political experience to try to reverse the downturn in the polls.

Trudeau made it clear on Oct. 24 that he would continue to lead the federal Liberals into the next federal election as party leader. His decision will undoubtedly bring new variables to the Canadian political scene.

No matter what choice Trudeau makes, the future of Canadian politics is full of uncertainty. If Trudeau chooses to resign, the Liberal Party will need to find a suitable leader within a short period of time to reintegrate the party’s strength and prepare for the general election. If Trudeau chooses to stick around, he needs to boost the Liberals’ polling support and win voters’ trust in the limited time available.

The future of Canadian politics will be how to develop, Trudeau’s political fate will be how, this is all full of variables. But what is certain is that this political storm will become an important event in Canadian political history, and its impact will go far beyond Trudeau’s personal political caree
