According to CNN, the US Secret Service announced on the 14th that there are no plans to enhance security measures for the Republican National Convention scheduled for the 15th in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, because they are “confident” in the existing plans.
At a press conference in Milwaukee, Secret Service convention coordinator Audrey Gibson-Chikwanha stated, “We will continue with our original plans, and we are confident in them.” CNN noted that this was the first public appearance by a Secret Service representative since the attack on former President Donald Trump on the 13th.
CNN reported that the press conference on the 14th, regarding the preparation for the Republican National Convention, did not mention the “assassination attempt,” but officials indicated that there were no signs of increased danger following the shooting incident. FBI Special Agent Michael Hensler from the Milwaukee office said, “There are currently no specific threats against the Republican National Convention or anyone attending the event.”
CNN also mentioned that within the “soft perimeter” surrounding the convention venue, carrying firearms will be allowed. Local officials stated that Wisconsin law does not permit any changes to this rule. Milwaukee Mayor Johnson said, “Wisconsin is an open carry state, and neither Milwaukee nor any other jurisdiction in the state can override state law.” Milwaukee Police Chief Norman stated, “State law grants the right to carry firearms. As a city, we cannot legislate to take away that right.”
ABC wrote a special article questioning Milwaukee’s gun regulations. According to the report, the so-called “soft perimeter” is within walking distance to the convention center, and under current Milwaukee regulations, one can carry firearms within this range but cannot carry other items like tennis balls or paintball guns. City council member Bowman called this regulation “ridiculous,” stating, “You can imagine someone at the entrance carrying an AR-15 semi-automatic rifle, another long rifle, and two pistols on their belt, but when the police question him, they ask if he has tennis balls?”
Earlier on the 14th, CNN reported that former President Trump had flown into Milwaukee, Wisconsin, ahead of the Republican National Convention. He once again made a fist-pumping gesture as he disembarked the plane.
The 2024 Republican National Convention will be held in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, from the 15th to the 18th, with an expected attendance of over 50,000 people. Unless unforeseen circumstances arise, Trump is expected to deliver a speech accepting the Republican presidential nomination on the evening of the 18th.
According to the latest report, former President Trump was the target of an “attempted assassination” at a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, on the evening of the 13th. The gunman was killed by Secret Service agents, with one spectator dead and two others seriously injured. American public opinion suggests that this “horrific incident” reflects the increasing political polarization in the US during the election year.
