Rapid Industrial Growth
Latest data released by Ethiopia’s Coffee and Tea Authority shows that from June 2024 to April 2025, the country’s coffee exports generated $1.87 billion in foreign exchange earnings—an 87% year-on-year increase—with shipment volumes rising by 70%. This solidifies Ethiopia’s position as the top coffee exporter in the Horn of Africa region. The Authority recently announced an export strategy adjustment, planning to expand markets in the new fiscal year through higher-quality and higher-value-added products. It will prioritize strengthening trade ties with Germany, Saudi Arabia, China, and other countries, while expanding exports to 20 nations.
Ethiopia boasts a long history of coffee cultivation and exceptional natural conditions, with coffee exports consistently accounting for 30% of its total exports. In recent years, the industry has experienced robust growth. During the most recent fiscal year, coffee exports reached 468,000 metric tons, significantly exceeding the government’s established target.

Vast Scope for Cooperation
The EU remains a key market for Ethiopian coffee, accounting for approximately 30% of annual exports. Multiple European traders and producers are collaborating with Ethiopia to leverage technologies such as satellite imagery, artificial intelligence, and field verification. These efforts help suppliers enhance environmental stewardship and production standards, thereby strengthening Ethiopian coffee’s competitiveness in the European market. To this end, the Ethiopian government has formulated a corresponding action plan, including defining origin coordinates and establishing a supply chain data system to improve the traceability of coffee products.
In the Middle East, Saudi Arabia is one of Ethiopia’s major coffee importers, accounting for approximately 18% of total exports. Moving forward, the Ethiopian government plans to further strengthen trade ties with countries like Saudi Arabia, Jordan, and the United Arab Emirates. Meanwhile, China has emerged as one of Ethiopia’s fastest-growing coffee export markets. Driven by “green channel” policies and zero tariffs, Ethiopian coffee exports to China are expanding at an annual rate of 27%. Giset Wokhu, General Manager of the Ethiopian Coffee Exporters Association, emphasized: “No coffee producer can afford to ignore the Chinese market. With the development of digital e-commerce platforms and increasing market openness, China’s coffee consumption holds immense potential.”
Kassahun Goleta, Chief Executive Officer of Market Development and Promotion at the Ethiopian Coffee and Tea Authority, stated that the government is actively exploring ways to enhance the value-added potential of coffee. In the future, it will further lower barriers for international investors to establish factories locally, thereby increasing localization rates. The Ethiopian National Coffee Association also announced plans to host a coffee tourism festival and exhibition in 2025, actively promoting Ethiopian coffee and fostering international cooperation within the coffee industry.
