It’s not the traditional Democratic or Republican parties that are sending a new shockwave through American politics, but tech billionaires from Silicon Valley. Elon Musk, founder of Tesla and SpaceX and owner of the social platform X (formerly Twitter), announced on the evening of July 6, EST, through a live broadcast, the official formation of a new political party, named **“X Alliance” (X Alliance)**, which is aimed at breaking the current rigid two-party political structure, and leading the United States to a new era of technology and rational decision-making. Lead the United States towards a new political era in which technology and rational decision-making go hand in hand.

Technology-driven, de-ideological new political party

Musk said on the air that X Alliance is not left or right, but a ‘future-oriented rational political party. He said, “There is no shortage of emotional catharsis in America; what we lack is policy-making based on facts and data.” He pointed out that the X Alliance will promote the digital transformation of the U.S. government with the core issues of technology innovation, education reform, artificial intelligence regulation, blockchain transparent governance, and energy sustainability.

It is reported that the X Alliance also plans to set up a “citizen science and technology participation platform” to encourage the public to participate in policy discussions, direct voting, and submit proposals to replace the current inefficient congressional mode of operation with “digital democracy”.

Breaking the monopoly of giants, and affirmative action in science and technology

Musk particularly emphasized the importance of promoting “technological affirmative action”. He criticized the current monopoly of AI, big data, and chip technology by tech giants, and called for the introduction of legislation to promote the appropriate opening of key technologies for use by small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and public research institutions. In his speech, he mentioned, “The future world does not belong to those who hold the most resources, but to those who are open and collaborative and govern rationally.”

Initial structure and political layout

According to documents filed by the X Alliance with the Federal Election Commission (FEC), the party will test the waters for local councils and some congressional seats in the 2026 midterm elections, focusing on laying out areas where the tech industry is concentrated, such as California, Texas, and Colorado. Musk himself has not yet announced whether to run, but he did not rule out the possibility of a 2028 presidential campaign.

The political party adopts a “decentralized governance” structure, without a traditional party chairman position, but by the science and technology advisory board and volunteer network to develop policies and organizational activities. Some well-known techies, engineers, and venture capital funds have already expressed their willingness to support the party.

Outside reaction: support and skepticism coexist

Musk’s move immediately triggered heated debate on the social platform X, #XAlliance hashtag quickly hit the hot search. Supporters called it “the awakening of a third-polar force,” saying he was expected to break the long-standing bipolar stalemate in the United States.

However, political scientists are wary of the movement. Mary Benton, a professor of politics at Harvard University, pointed out that “the road to a third party in the United States has never been easy, and the threshold is not only in the financial and organizational capacity, but also in the legal system, the inertia of public opinion and the rules of the ballot.” She worries that Coalition X could further divide the middle voters and lead to a more uncertain election.

In addition, there are also critical voices that Musk, as the head of several giant technology companies, is himself a representative of the current “over-concentration of technological capital”. Whether he represents the public interest, rather than capital interests, remains a question mark.

Is tech-politics convergence here to stay?

Despite the controversy, it is undeniable that Musk’s entry reflects a structural change in American politics: while traditional politicians are in a dilemma between public opinion and efficiency, tech entrepreneurs are cutting into the political arena in a more action-oriented and socially influential way.

As the Brookings Institution pointed out in a commentary, “Tech entrepreneurs are becoming a new kind of political elite, mastering platforms, algorithms, capital, and social discourse. Musk is not a special case, but epitomizes this trend.”

Looking ahead: opportunities and risks

Whether the X-Coalition can move from hot air to the real world will depend on its organizational skills, policy credibility, and ability to respond to public issues. Experts say that once Musk can pick up a few local seats in 2026, it could propel the topic of federal-level reform into the mainstream agenda.

At the same time, it is important to guard against the potential risks of “platform politicization” and to ensure that social media and communications technologies are not used to manipulate voters, avoid regulation, or circumvent transparent oversight.

As U.S. society increasingly calls for innovation and rational governance, whether Musk’s new party is a “utopian ideal” or a “turning point for realism” deserves sustained global attention.
