When you decide to build a granny flat (also known as a guest suite or mother-in-law suite) on your property, there is a lot to consider. It isn’t just about what style blinds you want for the windows, or what type of flooring you want. Think about the main house that you live in now, and how much planning went into building it. The same goes for your guest suite, or granny flat. Just because it is smaller does not mean it requires less planning. In fact, sometimes it requires more planning, because you are trying to cram the same features of your main house into a much smaller version.
Here are three steps to take when planning your project.
Decide on a basic layout
You don’t need to work out every last detail for your granny flat, or guest suite, but at least get a general layout down on paper. When you work with your builder, they can guide you in the specifics when it comes to the dimensions and design. A basic layout should include:
- If you want a single level or split level
- How many bedrooms you want
- If you want any exterior features, like a deck or garage
- An approximate number of square feet for the property
- Approximate dimensions for each room
Your builder has probably (and hopefully) worked on many guest suite/granny flat projects, so they can advise if your layout needs some adjustments. But having a starting point will make the project go more smoothly.
Decide on decorative elements
This step will also be a tentative plan initially, because you might find that as you go about planning your project, you will change your mind about some things. But again, having a place to start will help you figure out exactly what you want. Decorative elements to consider include:
- The type of flooring that you want (hardwood, carpet)
- The style of the property’s hardware (kitchen cabinet colors, etc.)
- What kind of appliances you want (stainless steel, white)
- The style of bathroom pieces like the sink, toilet
- The style of blinds and windows
Decorative elements are not things like lamps or pictures frames that you decorate with, but rather, the elements that “decorate” the interior in a more permanent way. These set the stage for the overall look and feel of the place.
Check out other projects for ideas
Even if you think you know how you want everything for your granny flat, or guest suite, it is always a good idea to check out other people’s projects. They may have done something that you didn’t think about doing, or if there is an area of your design that you are not sure about, looking over other guest suites might help you figure out what you want. You can also see how certain features look once the project is done. Visuals always help. You might think you want carpeted floors, but when you see photos from other projects, you might change your mind.
