Nintendo has officially unveiled its successor, the Nintendo Switch 2, the gaming console that inherits the success of the Switch, which will officially go on sale on June 5, 2025. The latest report claims that the Switch 2 features major improvements in hardware, software, and user experience, aiming to strengthen Nintendo’s position in the fierce gaming market.

Design and Display

The Switch 2 retains the hybrid design of its predecessor, which can be used as a portable device or connected to a TV as a console. It comes with a 7.9-inch LCD touchscreen with 1080p resolution, HDR10 support, and variable refresh rate (VRR) up to 120Hz for a smooth and immersive gaming experience.

Performance and Storage

Switch 2 comes with a customized NVIDIA processor that greatly improves graphics and processing power. It offers 256GB of internal storage and supports expandable storage via microSD Express card, ensuring there’s plenty of room for games and apps.

Joy-Con 2 Controller

The new Joy-Con 2 controller utilizes a magnetic connection system to ensure a strong grip connection. The controller is also equipped with larger buttons and a new “C” button to enhance the precision of game operation. In addition, the controller supports mouse-like functionality for precise in-game navigation.

Dock and Connectivity

The dock of the Switch 2 supports 60 fps at up to 4K resolution for high-quality visuals when connected to a TV. The dock includes multiple USB ports, HDMI ports, and Ethernet ports, providing a variety of connectivity options for any gaming setup.

Software and Backward Compatibility

Switch 2 is backward compatible with most Switch games and accessories, but some games may have compatibility issues. New features include GameChat, which supports voice and video communication via the integrated microphone and optional camera accessory, and GameShare, which allows gamers to play local multiplayer with one copy of a game for an enhanced social gaming experience.

Pricing and Availability

Switch 2 will be available in two configurations:

  • Base Edition: priced at $449.99 and includes the console and Joy-Con 2 controller.
  • Bundle Edition: priced at $499.99 and includes the console, Joy-Con 2 controller, and a digital version of Mario Kart World, an added exclusive game that supports dynamic weather changes and off-road racing for up to 24 players.

Pre-orders will begin on April 9, 2025. However, pre-orders in the U.S. will be delayed due to new tariff policies and changing market conditions. Nintendo said that the release date will not change and is still set for June 5th.

At launch, the Switch 2 will feature a rich array of games, including:

  • Mario Kart World: an enhanced racing game that introduces new tracks and multiplayer modes.
