Major Release: Malaysia’s First AI Chip Arrives

SkyeChip, a local chip design company, unveiled the MARS1000 at an event hosted by an industry association and attended by senior government officials. According to a statement from the Malaysian Semiconductor Industry Association (MSIA), this is the country’s first edge AI processor—a processor that can be directly embedded in devices like cars and robots, performing computations locally without relying on the cloud.

SkyeChip, a local chip design company in Malaysia, launched the MARS1000 at an event hosted by an industry association and attended by senior government officials. According to the latest statement from the Malaysian Semiconductor Industry Association (MSIA), this is the country’s first edge AI processor—a processor that can be embedded directly into devices like cars and robots, performing computations locally without relying on the cloud.

Technical Highlights and Application Scenarios

SkyeChip CEO Fong Swee Kiang stated that the MARS1000 is a smart IoT chip built on a 7nm process technology, offering cost-effective, intelligent, energy-efficient, and AI-enabled solutions.

He added that this marks the first time Malaysia has a domestically developed AI chip, and that the MARS1000 can be widely used in scenarios such as smart agriculture, Industry 4.0, smart cities, intelligent transportation, and safe cities.

Malaysia’s Strategic Position in Semiconductors

As a key component of the global semiconductor supply chain, Malaysia is seeking to play a larger role in the AI revolution. The country is already a key player in chip packaging and a significant production base for equipment manufacturers, including Lam Research. Furthermore, Malaysia’s status as an AI data center is rapidly growing, with giants such as Oracle and Microsoft recently investing heavily.

MSIA Chairman Datuk Seri Wong Shou Tai said on the same day that Malaysia’s exports of semiconductors and electrical and electronic products increased by 15.7% year-on-year in the first half of 2025, far exceeding the national average export growth rate of 3.8%.

He noted that Malaysia is well on its way to realizing its vision of becoming a global hub encompassing everything from IC design and advanced packaging, from device innovation to intelligent manufacturing, and talent development.

Government Support and Industry Ambitions

Compared to Nvidia’s most advanced AI chips designed for data centers and large-scale algorithm training, edge AI chips are significantly less complex and computationally powerful. However, this breakthrough is still a key step in Malaysia’s efforts to build independent capabilities in cutting-edge technology. It is currently unclear where SkyeChip will produce its chips.

Meanwhile, the government of Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim is pursuing a multi-year initiative to enhance Malaysia’s capabilities in chip design, wafer fabrication, and AI data centers. The government has pledged to invest at least 25 billion ringgit (approximately US$6 billion) to move higher up the global value chain.

External Challenges and Countermeasures

However, this ambition faces complex external challenges. The Trump administration plans to restrict AI chip exports to Malaysia and Thailand, citing suspicions that smuggling rings are using the two countries as transit points to ship high-performance chips to regulated markets. In response, Malaysia recently tightened export controls on AI chips containing US technology, stating that it “will not tolerate our country being used for illicit trade.”
